Pedalling & Power Analysis

Power meters have been embraced as an essential training tool for elite and professional cyclists, but beginners and non-professionals can also gain a great deal from a detailed analysis of their power production, especially as research indicates that pedalling asymmetry is greater at lower levels of power production.

Theoretically, the ideal pedalling technique consists of both legs producing constant and equal power throughout the pedal cycle, but in practice the rate of power production varies during the pedal cycle, and is commonly asymmetrical.

Power meters that are inbuilt components of the bike, such as SRMTM cranks or PowerTapTM hubs, are only capable of measuring total power production, and are best suited to enabling you to train at an optimal intensity.

At Cycling Physiotherapy Centre your pedalling technique and power production will be analysed with a CompuTrainer TM bicycle ergometer, a unique power-analysis technology which displays the power produced by each leg for every 15o of a pedal revolution, as well as total power production.

With this information it is possible to not only identify phases of weakness or asymmetry in your pedalling cycle, but to then retrain and refine your pedalling technique at a range of intensities with live feedback on the computer screen.

So whether you feel like your power production and pedalling style is uneven, or you have never been instructed how to get the most out of clipless pedals, or you are just plain curious to see how much power you produce, then a CompuTrainer TM analysis can help you.
