Core Stability

Core stability exercises for cyclists must be specific to the unique functional requirements of the activity, especially the sustained forward lean of the upper body. Our postural muscles are always adapting to our lifestyle, and poor postural habits and previous or existing injuries can result in impaired core stability.

The most efficient riding posture places minimal weight on the hands, arms and shoulders, and should enable a cyclist to remove their hands from the handlebars, whilst still pedalling, and be able to sustain the same forward lean angle and pedalling technique. Unfortunately, poor rider positioning combined with inadequate core stability ensures that many cyclists fail this simple test.

Cycling Physiotherapy Centre will develop for you a core stability program to encourage the retraining of postural muscle activity that will improve your general posture and function, as well as enable you to specifically orient your body in relation to the forces of gravity during cycling.

As well as individual consultations, classes are offered in six-week blocks, using a combination of Clinical Pilates equipment and a comprehensive and progressive home-exercise program.
